Inspired by watching Korean masters, I carved a bowl with flowers. I will fire it with a celadon glaze.
I received a lot of feedback on this pot. All comments were very positive. I had a secret though. I initially decided to carve the form because it was thrown unevenly and I would have destroyed it. So by carving, I was able to rescue the situation.
The other highlight was the purchase of a pottery wheel. This has been a dream for a couple of years.
But in my rush to play with the wheel, I didn't set up properly and felt all uncomfortable. The result was failure after failure. I had to scrape many pots off the bat and recycle the clay.
I was very down-hearted but at least I was home and didn't make an exhibition of myself. Any time I have used the wheels at the uni, people come to watch or I find myself teaching the little I know to any student struggling to centre clay on the uni wheels. There is an experienced student there, however, and we often chat while throwing pots. It's fun. He suggested one day I learn how to 'throw off the hump' which means forming a pot on the top of a centred lump and cutting it off, while the lump remains on the wheel.
