Week Eight

Week Eight

Week Eight I  am out west in the big sky country!  I am visiting my daughter for the week.  I am also getting ready for my father's 80th birthday and an artist talk I have to give at my exhibition in Brisbane.  I managed to trim my pots at uni before I left for my holiday, and put them in the kiln area, ready for bisque firing.

There is a pottery group here, in Dalby, but I visited the club house on the wrong day and had a nice chat with the painting group.  I have also been to the Dalby Regional Art Gallery.

Although I am out on the plains, I still have internet and can do some research for my project.

I think my project has always been about skills development.  At first, I thought I could just go to classes or do an internship, but when that didn't work I've had to continue on my own.  It makes sense to list the skills I am pursuing in this project.  Ceramics is such a huge field and I can't learn everything in a couple of months.  So I will think about scope.  What is this project?  And what is it not.

Desirable skills: a lot of links for future reference
  1. learn to throw on the wheel, ie. wheel-thrown pots

    • centering and coning

      2.  experiment with various surface treatments

There are so many other things I need to know and practice, like making handles, lids, spouts.  But I am limited with time at this stage.  My first concern is to make forms that I can decorate and sell.  I have always thought of pottery as being a commercial option for me.

So, in conclusion, this project is about developing some basic throwing skills to be able to make simple, elegant forms, the surfaces of which I can decorate.
